Heās a special boy.
He was left in a crate in the driveway in December 2022.
He was just a baby...
ā¦a baby with a piece of twine wrapped so tightly around his back hoof, it was obvious the distal tissue had already died.
It was stone cold, with no reaction to stimuli.
Most obviously, his body was already doing the important work of separating the dead hoof from healthy leg.
With surgical precision, like it knew exactly what to do.
It was assessed during his neuter, but closing so well by secondary intention, we opted to not intervene.
It was a spectacular process to witness ā no scalpel, no blood, no exposed bone or nerves; no sutures, tape, or glue ā just daily disinfectant spray and time. Letting nature finish what a human had maliciously (or, accidentally, perhaps) started.
A perfect, clean amputation.
Today, Jute is a big boy with a little, peg leg, happily living that sanctuary life under a sunny, blue, February sky.
